Revamping Teacher Mentorship: The Diploma Programme in Supervision and ICT

In response to the observed deficiency in supervisory and ICT skills among mentors tasked with guiding student teachers during their attachment to schools, the college initiated a Diploma programme in Supervision and ICT. This intervention, spanning four school terms, equips participants with essential skills and knowledge, culminating in the award of a Diploma upon successful examination.

Program Overview:

The Diploma Programme encompasses various facets essential to effective mentorship:

  • Theoretical Foundations: Theory of Education, covering Psychology, Philosophy, and Sociology of Education.
  • Professional Studies: Divided into syllabi 'A', 'B', 'C', and 'D', focusing on Methodology, Applied Education Language, Humanities, Sciences, Practical subjects, Research Methods, Curriculum Depth Study, and Contemporary issues such as health, life skills, and ICT.
  • Specialization: Students opt to specialize in one subject area, which extends up to first-year degree level. Options include English, ChiShona, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Studies, Mathematics, Science, Music, Physical Education and Sport, and Art and Design.
  • Teaching Practice: Following the 3-3-3 model, students engage in three terms of practical teaching experience in primary schools.

Partnership and Sustainability:

Initially developed in collaboration with UNESCO, the programme has transitioned to self-sustainability after UNESCO withdrew its support. Despite this transition, the college has successfully maintained the programme, ensuring its continued effectiveness in enhancing mentorship capabilities. The programme aims to empower mentors hosting student teachers during Teaching Practice, enabling them to supervise interns effectively, drawing upon the expertise acquired through the diploma programme.
