The ECD Programme: Addressing a Need in the Community

Observing the proliferation of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers within the community, it became apparent that many of these centers lacked properly trained staff equipped to handle ECD-related issues. In response to this gap, the college initiated an ECD short course aimed at providing facilitators in ECD centers with the necessary skills to deliver quality services.

Program Structure:

The program encompasses a comprehensive curriculum covering various aspects of Early Childhood Development:

  • Theoretical Foundations: This includes Psychological, Sociological, Historical, and Philosophical components.
  • Professional Studies: Divided into syllabi 'A', 'B', 'C', and 'D', focusing on Methodology, Administrative and Management skills, subject-specific teaching skills, research methods, and contemporary issues such as health, life skills, and ICT.
  • Specialization: Students select one subject area for enrichment from a range of options including English, ChiShona, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Studies, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Music, Physical Education and Sport, and Art and Design.
  • Teaching Practice: Under the 3-3-3 model, students undergo three terms of practical teaching experience in primary schools.

Learning Areas Covered:

The ECD Programme encompasses a diverse array of learning areas including Heritage Social Studies, Physical Education and Mass Displays, Information and Communication Technology, Indigenous Language, Visual and Performing Arts, Foreign Language, and Administration of ECD centers.

Duration and Certification:

The course spans six months, culminating in a comprehensive examination. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a certificate in Early Childhood Development.
